The Fight
Second round and he’s down on the mat.
First round felt really good,
but he grew cocky
and that’s when he blew it.
Second round bell, DING! DING! DING!
and he knew he was in trouble.
A flurry of punches and kicks, including
one to the groin the ref failed to notice,
shut down his peripheral nervous system.
The floor rose to meet him
like an estranged lover,
dealing still another blow.
His eyes spontaneously shut
as the bigger man’s knee
plunged into his stomach.
And still the ref was silent.
And still the crowd screamed for blood.
